Problems with installing gutters

Пластиковая водосточная система

Gutter system is an integral functional unit of a private house. But in order for the drainage system to serve for many years, it must be correctly assembled. In this article, we will look at the most common mistakes when installing gutters.

The most common installation mistakes

Saving on fasteners

The instructions for the installation of drainage systems indicate that the optimal distance for attaching brackets for gutters and clamps for downpipes is 50-60 cm. Additional fasteners are also required near the funnel. To save on the total cost of the gutter, not enough fixtures are used. This can lead to the fact that the chute may break off during heavy rain, if there is a blockage, or if ice and snow suddenly melt in winter.

Small distance between drainage and ground

In winter, when the temperature changes, when the snow first melts and then turns into ice again, ice can cover the drain, thereby blocking the free drainage of water. The accumulated water in the pipe, at low temperatures, can turn into ice, which can lead to the pipe cracking. Therefore, the distance between the drain and the ground should be kept at least 20-25 cm from the ground.

Loose or not snagging

During installation, the elements of the drainage system must be tightly attached to each other so that water cannot pass between them. Typically, the elements are attached until a characteristic click. If the docking of the elements was performed in an unreliable way, during heavy rain or snow melting, the system breaks off in the place where it was loosely fixed. Therefore, the elements should be checked for the reliability of their fastening.

Tight fixing of gutters and gutters in the wall

There are cases when the gutter and the downpipe are attached closely to the wall, leaving no gap between them. Considering that gutters (especially those made of plastic) tend to expand at high temperatures, such an installation can lead to deformation of the gutter. In order to avoid such a situation, you should leave a gap between the wall and the system of 2-3 cm and use the fasteners provided by the manufacturer.

Wrong gutter angle

In order for the water to flow into the funnel and not stagnate in the gutter, it is recommended to tilt the gutter towards the side where the funnel is located. According to the standards, for each running meter of the gutter should be 0.3-0.5 cm.

Maintaining temperature conditions for installation

Drains have certain temperature ranges, in which they need to be installed. For example, for PVC drainage systems, it is not recommended to install at temperatures below 5 ° C. There are gutters that can be installed at subzero temperatures, it all depends on the material.

Position of the gutter relative to the roof

The correct position is when the roof hangs over the center of the gutter. Also, the gutter should be located below the line, which can be conditionally drawn in the continuation of the roof. This will help to protect the drainage system from sudden snow melting.

Conclusions

Before proceeding with the installation of the drain, you should read the instructions from the manufacturer. Installation rules should not be neglected. This will help to save in the future not only money, but also time spent on repairs.
